Fathers & Daughters: A Crisis in the American Family

Much has been written and discussed of the importance of mothers in their daughter’s lives. Although it is contended by all that fathers are important, it is frequently written about and theorized in the most general of terms. This workshop will highlight the importance of the father in all stages of a daughter’s life and the various and different roles he plays at each particular stage.

Additionally, despite contemporary feminist theory and the evolution of women’s rights, father’s roles are still often conceptualized in traditional and at times archaic terms. For example, women take care and nurture their children, fathers babysit them, etc. This situation will be discussed in regard to the problems this creates and potential strategies and solutions.”
